By night, Dr. Turnbaugh hosts the “Science is Fun!” Podcast.

By day, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and the G.W. Hooper Research Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco. He is also an Investigator in the CZ Biohub.

His research focuses on the trillions of microbes that live in and on the human body with a focus on their role in nutrition and pharmacology. He trained at Whitman College and Washington University in Saint Louis prior to starting his first lab at Harvard University. Notable honors include the Kipnis Award in Biomedical Sciences, the Needleman Pharmacology Prize, the Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award, the Searle Scholars Award, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Disease Award.
